On the days I choose to work, the first thing I do is open our project management tool which gives me a clear picture of all the clients I have assigned to me, what needs to be done, and when it needs to be completed. This allows me the autonomy to plan my work for the day and the rest of the week. With all team members using QuickBooks Online, I can confidently rely on colleagues for help with any issues I may encounter.

I love dealing with multiple clients because I get to learn about a ton of different industries and how they work. For some clients, I may do very limited bookkeeping and for other larger clients, I may process their invoices, payables, AND their payroll! I may only go into one client’s books once a week and another client’s books on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I only work about 10 hours a month right now, but love that I can increase my hours whenever I’m ready, most likely when my kids start high school. There is a natural ebb and flow of work during the month, and I am able to schedule personal appointments or volunteer time to my kids’ schools when work is not so busy.

I love dealing with multiple clients because I get to learn about a ton of different industries and how they work. If I have an industry I’m really enjoying – for instance, non-profits, I have the opportunity to take on more of those types of clients and become specialized if I’d like. There is a natural ebb and flow of work during the month, and if I have time, I can assist managers with onboarding new clients. This usually requires coding clients who may be months behind in their bookkeeping. It feels great to be part of the team that gets them all caught up and on the right track.

Depending on whether it’s a busy week for the team or not, I may start my day by going to the dog park with my dog or I may start it with a nice steaming cup of coffee. When I’m ready to officially start my day, I begin by diving into my email inbox and reviewing my tasks, strategizing what I aim to accomplish throughout the day. I also check my personal calendar, scanning for any commitments especially grandkid duty or other appointments, which shape my daily schedule.

I usually tackle quick email responses first and, as the day unfolds, I might find myself handling more intricate tasks, such as conducting manager reviews of client books or addressing in-depth troubleshooting requests from fellow bookkeepers and clients. Some days, I dedicate solid blocks of time to my work, wrapping up my tasks for the day. On other occasions, I embrace flexibility, weaving in work around pre-scheduled appointments, lunch outings, errands, cooking, and daily commitments to my day.

Before I wrap up my workday, I make it a point to update my project management tool which keeps me at the top of my game, delivering exceptional results to our team and clients. Beyond work hours and throughout weekends, I disconnect from phone calls and emails, prioritizing quality time with my loved ones.
